Telephone Entry System
SENTEX  -  Resident/Tenant instructions

The Shumway complex have been equipped with Sentex telephone entry system, the most powerful, flexible and easy to use intercom and access control system available today.

How a visitor contacts you
The system uses your existing telephone to let you talk with visitors and allow them access to the building or complex.  A visitor is instructed to find your special “Directory Code" on the systems directory listing and inter that code on the keypad.  The system then dials your telephone number, which has been programmed into the system's memory.  The visitor never sees your actual telephone number.

NOTE: Simply typing the directory code into the system will not dial your unit.  The system requires a visitor to locate your name, and while your name is being displayed, enter the proper code.

When you answer the visitors call
Upon answering the telephone, you will be in a normal conversation with a visitor. Be sure to speak clearly and strongly so the visitor can hear you over any noise in the area.  The call can only last for a limited amount of time (which is set by the building management).  After that period, the system will automatically end the call to ensure the system is available to other visitors.  Starting 10 seconds prior to the end of the call, you will hear a short tone each second to signal you the call is about to end.

Once you have answered the call you may take one of three actions:

1.                Dial a   9  and to open the door gate where the system is located,

2.                Dial a   5  to open a second gate or door, (See Note below)

3.                Dial a   *  to hang it up without granting entry.

NOTE: At Shumway the keypad “5” is used at the Main drive-in gates only (Lake Street & 5th Ave) to open the drive-in gates from a “walk-in” call box.  It is set up this way because occasionally a visitor will drive up to the gate itself, get out of their car and approach the "walk in" gate call box, then ask for entry.  If you as the owner hit 9 the walk-in gate will unlock, which will not allow the car to drive in.   If you know the visitor is at the walk-in gate, the solution is to hit “5” and the large drive-in gate will open.  To avoid the problem you should instruct visitors to try to use the drive up call box when attempting to drive in.

If you dial a 9 or a 5, the system will unlock the door or gate for a preset period of time, usually 15 seconds.  The system will also emit short tones for three seconds and automatically hang-up.

If you are on the telephone when a visitor tries to call, he/she will receive a busy signal unless you have call waiting or a voice mail system.  If you have call waiting, simply switch over to the call from the visitor, let the guest in, then go back to the original call.

The telephone number dialed by the system can be your home condominium telephone or any other (non-long distance) phone number you choose, including your cell phone.  Be sure to let the property manager know what number you prefer.

Using entry FOBs
The Shumway also uses entry cards called FOBs.  When using a FOB you should hold it close to the receiver/transmitter, which is a small black box attached to the Sentex system at each gate.  When the system grants access, the light in the reader will turn green and the door will unlock for a short period of time.  Each FOB has a unique number which is associated with a Shumway owner. This means you should keep track of who is in possession of FOBs assigned to your unit.  When you leave Shumway and sell your unit it would be appropriate to pass your FOBs on to the new owner just as you would a key or combination lock.  New FOBs can be purchased for $35 each through the Property Manager, FOBs that stop working can be replaced for free.
